In 1991, however, the round-robin group stage was added on. There were also some changes to its format: before 1991, the league was a straight knockout tournament involving the champions of European domestic leagues.
The competition was rebranded as part of the revamp, where it got its current title. In fact, it was originally known as the European Champion Clubs’ Cup, or the European Cup for short. That was until the event saw itself undergo a little revamp in 1992, which turned it into the competition that we know today.
Before settling on its current name, the league had a different name. It was first established in 1955, making it older than the English Premier League betting by far.
